The first thing that you should decide while purchasing a GPS device is to plan its use. The second thing you should finalise is how much you would like to spend on the GPS tracking system. Do you plan to use using it for the fleet of your company or for your personal car or for fishing and hiking?
Current GPS receivers are limited as to what they can do and are optimised for specific purposes. There are GPS tracking systems available with electronic maps which display your location on the screen.
If you plan to use GPS in a vehicle there are several options available for you to choose from. You can have a basic or mapping handheld receiver, a dedicated automotive receiver, a GPS with a PDA or even laptop GPS. A mapping unit is a more useful choice considering the fact that driving usually involves unknown roads. A dedicated automotive receiver is bigger than the handheld units in order to accommodate a screen large enough to facilitate convenient viewing by the driver while the vehicle is in motion.
Such types of GPS tracking systems are powered by an electrical system and due to this reason they can be used only in the vehicles where an electrical supply is available. These automotive units have voice instruction which allows the users to navigate without taking the eyes off the road.
